Career Progression & Skills Development: Insights Across Industries for International Women’s Day
Last week, we shared insights on the importance of continuous learning with women from Skill Dynamics' Learning Success team for International Women's Day. Today, we continue by exploring skills development with women from across Skill Dynamics business areas.
Our dedicated learning academies for Supply Chain, Procurement, and Trade Compliance help learners develop skills from utilising AI, data analysis, and negotiation, to managing uncertainty, continuity planning, and cybersecurity. We sat down with the team to discuss how crucial it is, as women, to invest in skills development throughout their careers.
Introducing…

Day-to-Day Across Departments
The daily responsibilities of team members at Skill Dynamics, like any organization, vary significantly from one business area to another.
For example, Laura, SVP of HR & Legal, who has been with us for just over three years now, leads the company's people strategy and legal oversight, aligning business goals with effective workforce management and risk mitigation.
"My role includes overseeing the full employee lifecycle (recruitment, onboarding, performance, development, employee relations, and offboarding), ensuring compliance with employment laws, and supporting a positive, high-performing culture. I also review, and draft commercial contracts, manage legal risk, support governance, and advise leadership on regulatory and organizational matters."
While for Taylor, Junior Management Accountant, who joined Skill Dynamics in 2024, the day-to-day "focuses on accounts payable processing, sales invoicing, and managing finance inboxes to ensure queries are resolved efficiently. also supports month end processes, helping maintain accurate financial records and ensuring deadlines are met."
"The role has given me strong exposure to transactional finance and the importance of accuracy, organisation, and effective communication within the finance function."
Life looks a little different in the world of customer support, Doreen, Customer Support Officer, shares that "Some days require careful planning and coordination, others call for thoughtful advice and practical problem-solving. My time at Skill Dynamics has been a genuinely rewarding chapter in my career. It's a place where I've not only developed professionally but also grown in confidence and perspective. The role I hold is diverse and deeply centered around supporting people. There's no typical day, which is something I truly value. Often, the most important part of my day is simply being present, listening and staying motivated."
Finally, as a Customer Onboarding Specialist, Mougamani's day-to-day work involves "collaborating closely with Project Managers to set up and launch new customers, working with Learning Partners to support upgrades for existing customers, and assisting the New Business team in setting up demo environments, along with various internal initiatives."
The Impact of Continuous Learning
Naturally, at Skill Dynamics, we know the importance of continuous learning to progress and stay ahead of the game. This is why we wanted to ask our team members about how important they consider continuous learning to be as a woman.
For Doreen, "continuous learning is not merely important; it is vital", signifying growth, independence, and self-respect.
"Personally, learning represents empowerment for me. It signifies that I can engage at any table and make meaningful contributions, like recently obtaining my master's degree. It means I can adjust when industries evolve. It ensures that I never become stagnant, which is incredibly crucial in today's rapidly changing landscape. As women, we have frequently had to navigate environments where we must repeatedly demonstrate our worth. Continuous learning provides us with confidence, credibility, and options. However, beyond career progression, learning keeps our intellect vibrant. It enables us to adapt alongside the world instead of being moulded by it. It refines our voices, enhances our decision-making, and broadens our resilience. Continuous learning is not about rivalry. It's about consistently and consciously evolving into the best version of yourself."
In the finance landscape, continuous learning is key, in Taylor's words; "continuous learning is incredibly important to me, especially working in finance where regulations, systems, and best practices are always evolving. Studying towards my AAT qualification alongside my role as a Junior Management Accountant allows me to strengthen my technical knowledge while applying what I learn in real time. It not only builds my confidence but also ensures I'm adding greater value to the business." For her, "continuous learning is about staying adaptable, developing professionally, and creating opportunities for long term growth."
It is clear that continuous learning is viewed by the team as a valuable opportunity, to Mougamani, its "a form of self-investment." It's about "staying curious and committed to growth, which allows us to remain confident, relevant, and resilient." Although the opportunity "isn't just about staying ahead of the game; it's about expanding our voices, perspectives, and impact."
Laura also shares that continuous learning has been "pivotal" to her growth; "since working in HR, I've completed a law degree and a Master's in HR, which have strengthened my confidence, credibility, and ability to lead strategically. As a woman, I see continuous learning as essential. It builds expertise, resilience, and a strong voice at the leadership table, helping us stay competitive and progress in an ever-evolving environment."
The Most Important Skills
So, we know that developing skills is critical to career progression, but what skills are actually most important?
Our interviewees have a wide variety of career experiences. We asked about what skills they thought were most critical to develop based on their career experiences so far.
"From my experience in HR, the most important skills to develop are communication, strategic thinking, and emotional intelligence. These allow you to lead effectively, build strong relationships, and make decisions that balance business needs with people's growth." – Laura, SVP of HR & Legal
"From my experience so far in finance, I've learned that both technical and soft skills are essential.
Strong analytical skills and attention to detail are key in management accounting, but communication is just as important; being able to clearly explain financial information adds real value." – Taylor, Junior Management Accountant
"Adaptability, communication, and problem-solving. Every customer is different, so understanding their unique needs and setting clear expectations from the start is critical. The ability to collaborate cross-functionally and stay solutions-focused ensures a smooth and positive onboarding experience." – Mougamani, Customer Onboarding Specialist
"In a role that centers around supporting others, empathy is fundamental. People rarely come to you simply looking for answers; they're seeking clarity and understanding. Taking the time to truly listen, without interrupting or immediately offering solutions, creates space for them to feel valued and respected. Communication is equally important. Guidance needs to be delivered in a way that is honest, transparent, and easy to understand particularly when someone may already be feeling unsure or overwhelmed. Alongside this, patience and adaptability are essential. Your tone, not only spoken but also written, matter. Every person brings their own experiences, challenges, and perspectives, which means a one-size-fits-all approach simply doesn't work. Ultimately, authenticity underpins everything. When your support comes from a genuine place of care, people can feel it. That sincerity fosters trust, and trust is the foundation of any meaningful and effective support." – Doreen, Customer Support Officer
Give to Gain
Doreen summarised it perfectly when she said, "International Women's Day is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the power of collective support."
"In my career, I've been lucky to experience the profound impact of generosity and collaboration. One memorable moment was when my colleagues generously offered to mentor me during a critical time. They shared invaluable insights, resources, and are always ready to provide a helping hand. Their support didn't just help me advance professionally but also inspired me to extend the same kindness to others."
Mougamani also reflected on the "several occasions in [her] career where [she] wouldn't have achieved the same outcomes without the support of [her] colleagues. Whether it was reporting managers, Project Managers, or teammates, each has contributed in meaningful ways."
"One moment that stands out was when I was a team lead with only two members on my team. Although they were both new to their roles, we were able to deliver successfully by supporting one another, sharing responsibilities, and working collaboratively toward a common goal. That experience reinforced for me that generosity and teamwork truly drive progress."
In the spirit of the 2026 theme for International Women's Day, focusing on the kind of power of generosity, reciprocity, and support that Doreen and Mougamani highlighted, our interviewer asked about the best piece of advice the team had ever been given.
For Laura, this advice was: "listen more than you speak." For her, "understanding people's perspectives builds trust, drives better decisions, and strengthens workplace culture."
For Doreen, the most valuable advice she ever received was to "embrace setbacks as learning opportunities". She shares that this "was a simple yet powerful reminder that failure isn't something to fear, but rather an essential part of growth. That perspective helped me reframe challenges, seeing them not as obstacles but as stepping stones toward progress. It taught me to remain resilient, to adapt, and to trust that each experience, even the difficult ones, contributes to my personal and professional development."
Mougamani shares that, "give the best of yourself", has guided her professional journey; "it's about showing up fully, even when challenges arise, and bringing your ideas, effort, and voice to the table. Doing so not only raises your own standards but inspires those around you. Over time, I've realized that consistently giving your best opens doors to growth and new opportunities."
Last, but not least, for Taylor the answer was clear and simple; "never stop asking why".
